Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your business's presence for AI recommendation engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and the AI assistants embedded in phones, browsers, and smart devices. It is distinct from SEO, which optimizes for search engine rankings, and from SEM, which buys placement in search results.
GEO matters because AI recommendation engines are becoming the primary discovery channel for high-intent local business queries. When a homeowner in a plumbing emergency asks Siri or Google Assistant for help, or when a family uses ChatGPT to find a pediatric dentist, the result is a recommendation — not a list of links. That recommendation either includes your business or it doesn't.
Unlike SEO, GEO is not yet a crowded discipline. Most local businesses have not started optimizing for AI recommendations. The businesses that do so now — before GEO becomes standard practice — will build compounding advantages in citation authority, verification status, and AI familiarity that will be difficult to replicate later.
